The process

  1. Apply or get invited

Apply here, or ask any member to invite you. Teams and school cohorts can apply together.

  2. Review

We look at what you've built or done. A formal portfolio isn't required. Raw ability counts.

  3. Interview

A video call about your skills, what drives you and what you want to build.

  4. 30-day trial

Work on an OASA project or your own, as long as it moves autonomy forward. You can ask the whole community for help.

  5. Decision

You're accepted, or you get feedback and an invitation to reapply.

  6. Onboarding

Accounts, the contributor agreement and an onboarding buddy.

Questions

Does it cost anything?
No. There are no OASA dues. If you join a chapter, you pay your local makerspace's normal dues.
How old do I need to be?
15 or older. Members aged 15 to 17 need a parent or guardian's consent. Youth members work on open member projects, with supervision for tools and testing. Paid contract work is for members 18 and older.
Do I need a degree or a portfolio?
No. We look at what you've built or done, and raw ability counts. Share links, photos or anything that shows your work.
There's no chapter near me.
Projects are online, so you can take part from anywhere in the United States. You can also start a satellite group with other members near you. Read how satellite groups work.
Can my team or class apply together?
Yes. Any member can invite a whole robotics team or school cohort. Teams apply together and do a team trial.
Can I get paid?
Paid contract work runs through OASA Engineering, a separate company. It is opt-in, for members 18 and older, and needs verified ID. Members with strong track records may be invited.
What if I'm not accepted?
You'll get feedback and an invitation to reapply.
